"A SNAP SHOT OF OUR HISTORY" | When Nellie Goble opened THE COTTAGE in 1933, its location at Wayne and Coldbrook Avenues was surrounded by farmland.
Legend has it that Nellie began each business day with a fresh keg of beer, and when the key was "kicked" she closed the doors.
Although Nellie was described as somewhat cantankerous, THE COTTAGE attracted works from the Chambersburg Engineering Company who drank beer at picnic tables set up under shade trees at the rear of the building. In cold weather, a pot-bellied stove warmed the bar. | A succession of owners left their individual marks on THE COTTAGE. In the 50's Stubby Carson's basket of steamed shrimp was the talk of the town. Charles "Hotty" Bowers bought THE COTTAGE from Jimmy Grimes, a police officer in 1968 and added the dining room. Jake Corwell and Smitty Armstrong took over in 1974. Jake became sole owner in 1981 and expanded both the dining room and the bar area. | The Boocks, Tom and Sean, purchased THE COTTAGE in July of 1992. While making improvements, the Boocks have held on to those features that make THE COTTAGE one of the area's most popular restaurants and gathering places.
